Cold Day…Hot Reuben!

What’s better than a hot Reuben sandwich on a cold day? This limited time offering at “Subway” is definitely worth braving the cold temps! The best thing about “Subway” is its convenient location right in the heart of Southside Works.

Fresh, Fast and Fun!

“QDOBA” is another one of my favorite places to eat. If you’re a fan of Mexican food, you’ll love how you can experiment with a variety of ingredients to create the perfect combo according to your culinary mood. Although there is almost always a line, the friendly staff quickly assembles your meal according to your specifications so you have plenty of time to sit and enjoy your delicious creation.

Fresh, Healthy and Delicious!

“Pita Pit,” one of my all-time favorite go-to places, lets patrons select from a variety of ingredients to customize the perfect pita. Add fresh toppings or have them grilled before your eyes for a warm meal (perfect for these chilly days!) Watching your carbs? No problem! Any of the menu items can also be served over crisp lettuce or spinach. Delivery is an option, but the friendly and efficient employees at the South Side East location always bring a smile to my face which makes me look forward to my weekly visits.

8 South Side Facts You May Not Know

  1. The South Side was once the center of glass production in the United States. In the late 19th Century, the neighborhood was home to nearly 100 glass factories.
  2. East Carson Street used to be the commercial center for immigrants who lived around it and worked in the steel mills. Today it has been reborn as a popular location for professionals, many of whom live in refurbished row houses and shop in the trendy shops lining the streets.
  3. Kaufman’s Department store got its start on the South Side. The first location opened on East Carson Street in 1871 before eventually relocating to its iconic downtown location (now closed).
  4. The South Side Riverfront Trail connects with the Great Allegheny Passage, which goes all the way to Washington, D.C.
  5. There are 68 sets of public stairs in the South Side Slopes, totaling 5,447 steps.
  6. South Side started out as land given to John Ormsby in 1763. He was warranted two to three thousand acres by King George III for his service in the French and Indian War (A part of the Seven Years War). Later this land would be separated into four neighborhoods: Birmingham, South Pittsburgh, East Birmingham, and Ormsby.
  7. East Carson Street is named for a sea captain friend of Dr. Nathaniel Bedford, the man who laid out the neighborhood of Birmingham. As it was in the past, it is the main business artery of the South Side still today!
  8. Eventually, Birmingham (South Side) was annexed into the city of Pittsburgh in 1872.

‘Tis The Season!

Today I am taking a day off from my typical “business” photography so I can share this photo I took of the Southside Works plaza festively decked out for the holidays. The decorations seemed to put a smile on the faces of everyone I passed and some were even humming seasonal tunes! The residents and business owners all seem to take a sense of pride in their surroundings – just one more thing I love about the South Side East/Hot Metal Bridge neighborhood!

Prost! (Translation: Cheers) It’s Friday!
